First Chat Lycos Full Text Search Engine Hotmail

First Chat (IRC):

The initial protocol for IRC was designed by Jarkko Oikarinen in 1988 in Finland. IRC Stands for Internet Relay Chat. Since then Chat sessions have spread all over Internet. IRC was designed to allow a large number of people from different locations to chat amongst themselves in real time by typing simple text.


Lycos:

Lycos one of the earliest search engines, first developed in 1994 by Dr. Michael L.Mauldin and a team of researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University Center for Machine Translation. Lycos name comes from the Latin name for the wolf spider that is a hunter, activity stalking their prey. Lycos was first launched on July 20, 1994.



Full Text Search Engine:

A Full text search engine of the entire web called Altavista. On December 15th, 1995 a team led by Louis Monier, who was a computer scientist with DEC’S Western Research Lab, Launched a search called Altavista. Altavista means “a view from above”. It was one of the first major search engines developed for online searching. It became one of the leading search tools on the web, but started decline with the advent of Google and also changes in their corporate management.



Hotmail:

Hotmail is one of the fastest successes in the Internet. It is a free web mail service accessible from anywhere in the world using Internet. Hotmail is a brainchild of Jack Smith and an Indian entrepreneur Sabeer Bhatia in 1995. Again these two are from Stanford University. Hotmail was officially launched on July 4th, 1996. Independence Day of the USA.
